Long Arm Of Law Could Potentially Crush 10-Year Old Boy Recently a 10-year old boy was found to have started a fire in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. In Southeastern-Indiana "speak" this is just over the holler from where I live in Aurora, Indiana. The fire destroyed five buildings and displaced several people from their homes. That it was a tragedy is indisputable. Is the fact that it was started by a ten-year old boy forgivable. Absolutely! There has been no reports stating that this is a juvenile delinquent already prone to causing mischief. He was simply playing a lighter. He started some paper on fire and then covered it with Styrofoam. When it was out of control, he ran away. He was scared and he panicked. He reportedly is being charged with a delinquent act of arson. The resulting penalty could be that he would serve time in juvenile detention until the age of twenty one. There is no evidence to suggest that he wanted those buildings to burn. That was not his intention. You could even describe it as an accident. Most of us can remember playing with fire when we were young. Many of us, including myself, were very lucky that we did not cause our own tragedy. Throwing this young man into the legal system where he can learn from our area's troubled youth exactly how to be a criminal would be a huge mistake. This could potentially destroy this young boy's life. I find it ironic that in Cincinnati, only miles away, that when a 40 year old woman, Brenda Nesselroad-Slaby left her two year old child in a car in the smoldering heat for several hours, eventually killing her, was not charged with anything. The reason, it was an accident. The mother who had been warned by her five year old child's daycare that it was not good to leave her two year-old child in the car the previous winter was not charged with anything. This woman was guilty in the very least of negligence and child abuse if not murder. Does she feel bad about what happened? Sure she does. She should. She also should have been brought before a court of law and held accountable for her actions. She is forty years old. There was no excuse. The young man that the prosecutor is choosing to hold accountable for his actions was ten years old. He acted in a manner typical of well.....a ten year old. He should be held accountable to a point. He should learn this lesson in a most strenuous way. Hopefully reason and a certain level of compassion will return to this situation. Creativity in making this happen will be necessary. I am also hoping that whatever his consequences, that they happen soon. Dragging this on will be an additional punishment for the boy and his family. There is still hope for a bright future for this young man. Not however if he is raised by a warden and guards. This should not cost him his life. ---------------- ----------------------------------------------- |
