Holy Smurf! The Little Blue People Are Fifty I know that you thought that the only good thing to come out of Belgium were waffles but thankfully for Belgians everywhere you were wrong. Belgium is also responsible for the Smurfs. It is difficult to tell which of the two have had a bigger impact on the world but interestingly enough you can smother both of them with butter and syrup and eat them.In case you do not remember, Smurfs had their own language. It sounded very much like ours only they replace virtually any conceivable word or part of a word with Smurf. For example, "I found this practice very smurfing annoying." When writing an article about the Smurfs you can expect the injection of a few Smurfy words. The fact that they may be placed throughout the article is obligatory and I make no smurfing apologies. This could be a beautiful sentimental article about growing up watching the Smurf's and the effect they had on my development but it is not. I could have watched the Smurf's every Saturday morning but I did not for no other reason than that they were highly annoying. They were small, blue, and said Smurf way too much. Yes I rooted for Gargamel. I mean no disrespect to their creator Pierre "Peyo" Culliford who passed away fifteen years ago. He created a marketing masterpiece that has had an effect on multiple generations of kids. That is certainly more than I can say. I struggle being a good influence on my own kids sometimes. I was just more of a Superfriends guy. I do wonder if ole' Peyo may have tipped the bottle a few too many times. Apparently he came up with the word Smurf when he was at dinner after having forgotten the word for salt and instead asked someone to pass him the smurf. I do not know how the two words sound in Peyo's native language but they are certainly very different in ours. Why is it exactly that there were ninety nine male Smurfs and only one female Smurf? This fact alone leaves little wonder that they were blue and had such big hands for their size. I could be even more juvenile here but my mother reads this column. Apparently the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Smurf's is also bringing with it a revival of sorts. They are planning a new feature film and the release of a DVD of the same old TV show's that I chose not to watch in the eighties. All of this is occurring just in time for my youngest kids to start
watching children's programming. A fact that I am not very smurfing
thrilled about. ----------------------------------------------- |
