Why Must We Shoot Down This Satellite?

I saw a report on the news that some 17000 man made objects have returned to earth since we started placing these objects in outer space. To date zero deaths have occurred as a result of these objects reentering the earths atmosphere. Perhaps the biggest reason for this is that 70 percent of the earth is covered in water.

I cannot stop wondering why there is such an urgency with this particular satellite. I know we will never know the true reason for this endeavor, and perhaps we should not, but it is fun to wonder.

It is true that this satellite contains hydrazine which is used as a fuel for the satellite. This is also the same fuel used for other satellites that we have not bothered to shoot down.

One alternate theory is that the U.S. is afraid of other governments getting technology insights if the satellite were to land on their turf. Well the fact is everyone is already doing it already. Not a huge issue really.

Possibly the best reason to do it is two-fold. The first is we want to show our might. We want to pound our chests and dare anyone to mess with us. The second reason is that we will gain valuable information that could be used to shoot down enemy satellites and more importantly to be able to shoot down inter continental ballistic missiles.

Both are valid reasons but ones the U.S. can not confirm because of an incident that happened early last year.

China demonstrated their might by shooting down a satellite of their own. This brought out condemnation from much of the world not just the U.S. The test resulted in thousands of potentially damaging pieces. The U.S. was mostly concerned with potential damage to the space station.

The U.S. needs to justify their actions by emphasizing a higher purpose. That being the safety of human lives on earth. They have rationalized that this time there will be little chance of damage to the space station but have expressed the belief that if debris does head their way they can dodge it.

I dodged a deer the other night but the Kia Sportage I was driving costs far less than a bus-sized spy satellite.

The lesson the rest of the world should take from this. Do not do what we do, do what we say.........or else.
