The Manfred Mann Controversy - Deuce or Douche? In 1976 Manfred Mann's Earth Band released an album that contained that ever popular song Blinded By The Light. Ever since that release many have wondered about the pronunciation of a certain portion of the lyrics. What we all hear when we listen on the radio or on the cd is "Wrapped up like a douche, another runner in the night." Exactly what does that mean and is that what they actually meant to say are the big questions that need to be answered. Were they really talking about that ever popular and sometimes necessary feminine hygiene product that is often talked about at the breakfast table if we are to believe Massengill? Let us delve a little further into the history of the song. It was written and originally released by Bruce Springsteen. The Bruce Springsteen version gets no play on the radio and is of no consequence to most of us. In the original version Bruce Springsteen says, "...cut loose like a deuce." In this case "Deuce" refers to an automobile. That automobile being a 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe. In this context the lyrics make perfect sense. Manfred Mann changed these lyrics slightly and they are supposed to be "...revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night." If you listen closely it is possible to believe that they were really saying "revved up" and not "wrapped up". That being said no matter how many times you listen to the song it sounds as if they are saying "douche" and not "deuce". Certainly "wrapped up like a douche" does not make any sense. You do not wrap douche products as if they could be used as a birthday or Christmas gift. And if that were in the realm of possibility I would strongly discourage any man doing this for their girlfriend or wife. It was once said that Manfred Mann's New Zealand accent was the reason for the mispronunciation of deuce. I find this a stretch. Will Manfred Mann ever fess up to the truth. Was it intentional? Maybe he will, maybe he will not. I do believe though that there is hope. If we can find out the true identity of "deep throat" certainly it is possible that Manfred could enlighten us one day. Until that day and even after that day I will stay crank up the radio when Blinded By The Light Comes On. No matter what he says the song still rocks. ---------------- ----------------------------------------------- |
