Bobby Wins Number 900
In Indiana there is no need to clarify who you are talking about when you
say Bobby. In case you are not from Indiana I will elaborate. On January 16th Bob Knight and his Texas Tech team beat Texas A&M enabling him to record win number 900. No
man has ever recorded more wins in Division I basketball.
If you are a college basketball fan I am certain of one thing and that is you either love Bob Knight or you hate Bob Knight. There
really is no in between.
He has had many incidents which have raised the ire of many fans. His prolific use of bad language is legendary. If there was
any one man who has proven that he really does not care what anyone thinks about him it is Bobby Knight. The funny things is there
are a legion of fans who think so much of him. Yes, including myself.
Growing up in Indiana Bobby Knight was a legend to many. This fact was
driven home when I entered Indiana University as a freshman.
Bobby used to have at least one open practice where students and fans could come and watch. You would be surprised how many people
would go and watch a practice. While the players were running drills and the assistants were working with them the students in
the stands would be talking amongst themselves and the arena would be quite loud. But when Bobby talked you could hear a pin drop.
Everyone just wanted to hear what he had to say.
Bobby would sometimes hold a question-answer session for University students. When
he did this you could not fit another person in the auditorium. For these he was generally on his best behavior and he was remarkably
gracious to the students.
Bobby Knight knows basketball. Bobby Knight knows how to win. These facts are indisputable. It would be foolish to say otherwise.
Is that enough reason to like him? No, not really.
There are other reason's as well. Bobby Knight genuinely cares about his
players. He supports not just the athlete but the student. He is as much a
teacher as a coach. The vast majority of his former players are fiercely
loyal. Obviously there are a small few that have gone public with certain
allegations but not no one is liked by everyone
especially Bobby. Many profess that he taught them not just about basketball but life.
He graduates his players and there has never been a hint of scandal
regarding the way he operates his program or handles recruiting.
His teams are very disciplined and his players are mentally tough. He expects the very best from them. He gets upset when they do not give him their best. That
is what coaches do. There are surely different ways to motivate players to give their best and Bobby Knight's methods are often
questioned.
If I were to be honest, Bobby Knight has crossed the line many times. There have been times I wished he had kept his mouth shut.
There are other times I am glad he did not.
Supporting Bobby opens one up to attack from all fronts. The bottom line is that he is not sinister and he is not evil and he
has done far more good for college basketball than bad.
Just one man's opinion. Now let me have it.
