Charlie Wilson's War

With Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks as part of the cast I was expecting a little more when I went to see this movie. I was expecting fascinating. It fell a little short of this but the movie was worth going to see in the theatre.
Philip Seymour Hoffman offers another compelling performance as rogue CIA agent Gust Avrakotos and is quickly moving up my favorite actors list. Quite frankly when he was on the screen the movie was immediately more entertaining.

Tom Hanks portrays Congressman Charlie Wilson and Julia Roberts portrays socialite and beauty Joanne Herring. Together the three of them work successfully to put arms in the hands of Afghani's fighting off the evil empire of the Soviet Union.

Based on a true story, it is hard to imagine that the movie was more exciting than the real life adventure. It would be hard to capture in a movie the difficulties associated with pulling off a clandestine war against a super power. Certainly what Charlie Wilson and Herring accomplished is worthy of more kudo's than simply having Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts portray them in a movie.

There are a couple interesting things of note that were not in the movie.  Although his staff was correctly portrayed as a bevy of beauties they were known around the capital very fittingly as "Charlie's Angels".

Also when Charlie Wilson was invited to celebrate the last Soviet soldier leaving Afghanistan at CIA headquarters they flashed a quote from Pakistan's president, Gen. Mohammad Zia ul-Haq on a big movie screen stating simply, “Charlie did it.”

If you do a little research on Charlie Wilson and Joanne Herring you would find that their lives alone are amazing stories in themselves. They lived large and did great things despite wearing the tags of alcoholic playboy and tart respectively. The stories they could share with us could probably make for a couple more movies.

Of course I would love to hear some of the stories that they can not share with us.
