Conquering Fear

Possibly one of the most quoted lines is “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”  FDR used this line in his first inaugural address and was referring to the great depression.  People were scared to do anything.  They were scared to invest in an economy when it looked so bleak.  They were not going to spend money on going to a movie when they might need it for a loaf of bread.

When I wrote that first part of the paragraph I had initially started it like this “Possibly one of the most OVER quoted lines is..”  I thought about it and realized that it is a pretty darn good line.  And you can not have too much of a good thing.

Fear does have a tendency to paralyze us.  It keeps us from living a full life.  I am not talking about fear of spiders.  I am sure most of us would do just fine never seeing another spider the rest of our lives.

Depending on your career a fear of public speaking could possibly adversely effect your performance.  Even a fear of flying can keep you from seeing all those places you have dreamed of seeing.  You can get by with never flying and you can get by without ever speaking in public.  The point is that when you conquer certain fears something happens.  You grow.  You improve.

Everyone has fears.  Absolutely everyone.  No one else really knows what these fears mean to you.  No one knows exactly what it would mean for you to overcome them.

Sometimes this does take steps.  Taking a fear of flying class is great but unless you actually get on a plane and fly somewhere you have not accomplished anything.  Unless you test yourself you will never know if you could overcome your greatest fears.

It is a victory that only you know the true value of.  The next time you give a speech and you wow the audience.  No one in that audience knows how hard it was for you to get to that point.  If you are flying for the first time, the passenger next to you has no idea what it took for you to get on that plane.

Fighting fear is a battle of the mind.  I encourage you to battle your fears.  If you can start to learn to control your own mind that is an extremely powerful tool for success in all aspects of your life.

Sometimes there is no applause from the gallery.  Sometimes there are no accolades.  However, when you conquer a fear the self-satisfaction is most often enough worth the trip.
