In retrospect it appears that both parties pulled off very successful conventions. Both events were newsworthy and offered historical moments. The Democratic party nominated the first black candidate for President of
the United States and the Republican party nominated its first female as
Vice-President.
The Democrats, more specifically the Clintons did a wonderful job of unifying their party. The Republicans, more specifically Governor Sarah Palin managed to revive a very boring and largely unsuccessful campaign. I do not want to suggest that the conventions were nothing more than multiple days of a great deal of fluff but there was little else. They are a necessity and certain orders of business were taken care of. However, each party is in complete control of their own convention. Great planning is necessary to fill the evenings telecasts with their messages of hope and change. A great many speechwriters and advisors were put to task over the last couple of weeks. Their job was to make sure that those who were actually doing the speaking said the right things in a matter that would resonate with their party and most importantly undecided voters. The debates however will be a different story. Yes the candidates will spend hours rehearsing and preparing responses to questions that will likely be asked but they will be tested by the moderator as well as eachother. The American people will be looking for candidness and their ability to look us in the eye and speak the truth. The issues shall be heard. That is the heart of what this election and every election should be about. Their policies are what is going to direct this nation in the next four years. It will be nice to hear straight from the horse's mouth what each candidate proposes on issues such as energy, Iraq and our economy. I believe the person that will win these debates will be the candidate that speaks to the nation as a group of individuals able to make an intelligent decision and not the one who speaks to us as a foolish people who do not know what is best for them. We do not want to hear generalities. Do not tell us you are going to create more jobs tell us how you are going to create more jobs. Do not tell us you are going to lower health care costs tell us exactly how you are going to lower health care costs. How long will it be before we can attempt to rid ourselves of the nearly trillion dollar deficit we currently have? Will it even be possible while we carry on a costly war overseas? The winner will be the one with the right answers. Who will that be? I for one can not wait to find out.
