It Is Time To Stop Messing Around

The United States reliance on foreign oil must stop. Everyone in the United States should be opposed to giving money to those in the world who want to kill us. Our gas prices and cost of living are effected by nations that would love to destroy us.

We will always have a need for oil. It is inconceivable that we could ever completely rid ourselves of the need for oil. We could however rid ourselves of the need for foreign oil.

As a life long Republican I do not feel that President Bush is bent on destroying the United States. However, as a member of a family that has made its money from oil, he has a little incentive to maintain the industry. We need a President that is committed to renewable energy, bio-fuels, and the development of hydrogen fueled cars.

Although most U.S. automakers are developing alternative fuel cars they have no mandate as of yet to get the job done in any certain time frame. They need a mandate. They need incentives.

President Kennedy once saw falling behind in space exploration as representing a great danger to maintaining our world power. Our reliance on foreign oil represents a far greater danger in today's society and economy. Kennedy mandated that we put a man on the moon in 10 years. We put a man on the moon in 10 years when no one thought it could be done.

As much as I am for a free-market society in certain cases such as this the government must step in to ensure the viability of the American way of life for generations to come. Allowing a gas tax holiday this summer would offer little relief and basically amounts to short term thinking. We need to think long term but we need a time frame that makes sure we get it done quickly.

When gas prices went through the roof in 1975 Brazil mandated major changes and placed an emphasis on Ethanol. Today they are very close to being oil-independent.

America at that time was becoming energy conscious but when gas prices normalized we lost emphasis and motivation. We are paying for that lack of foresight now.

American's think about today and not about tomorrow. Unfortunately tomorrow is here.
