The Importance of Forgiveness

Valentine’s Day is over.  Thank goodness, right?  I know some of you may be in the doghouse today after yesterday’s performance.  I once had a friend who gave his wife a book entitled “How to Please Your Man” for Valentine’s day.  I assure you this man was very intelligent but apparently did not have the common sense God gave a rock.

The point is people make mistakes, sometimes they are small mistakes and sometimes they are real doozies.  Either way hopefully forgiveness will play a part in putting those mistakes to rest.

Being granted forgiveness when you have done something wrong is a wonderful gift.  It relieves stress, it helps remove the guilt, and enables you to go on.

But a remarkable thing happens when you forgive someone else.  You feel better too.  I know some people say they will forgive you but then you get the impression that they just get over it.  Perhaps your special someone has committed some heinous act towards you last week, last month, last year or ten years ago and you just can not seem to let it go.

 Let it go.

If you are going to move forward in your relationship you need to realize that harboring ill feelings towards that person keeps you from moving on in the relationship.  They were wrong when they hurt you, but you are just as guilty for not forgiving them.  I have committed wrongs in the past and I truly do understand that some mistakes take a little longer time to get over.  However, to let anything linger indefinitely is unnecessary and unproductive to both parties.

It might be blunt.  But if you are not going to forgive them then you may not need to be in the relationship.  It is impossible for that relationship to grow until you move past the hurt.

This can be anything from a secret that was kept that should not have been kept to not taking the trash out on trash night.

And if you have had a good Catholic upbringing like myself guilt is very familiar to you.  There are many people who are harder on themselves than anyone else could ever be.  Sometimes you need to forgive yourself as well.  What’s done is done.  Don’t make the same mistake again.

Remember, unless it is the end of the world, then it isn’t the end of the world.
