Iraq's Twisted Version Of Equal Rights For Women

In Iraqi society, since the first Gulf War, women have enjoyed far fewer freedoms than their American counterparts. They are increasingly the victims of "honor" killings which go largely unreported and unpunished. Their mobility is restricted. Islamic law dictates a lower status for women.

However recent events has shown that they are accorded some rights in Islamic society. They are allowed to strap dynamite to their bodies and kill themselves as well as anyone within close range.

Women are ideally suited for this task since their bulky garb is the perfect type of clothing to conceal explosives.

"Batman: The Dark Knight" and Iraqi women suicide bombers are not two topics that most people would think would be discussed in the same article.

Yet I am going to make a connection. Throughout "The Dark Knight" ordinary people are forced to make decisions based on morals and honor. Is everyone in fact corruptible? If it comes down to it would people kill others if it meant they save themselves.

In our world. In our way of thinking to die saving someone else is honorable. It is the ultimate sacrifice.

In Muslim societies the ultimate honor is to die while killing others. It is the way their world works. It is what is taught to many of their children from an early age.

I do not intend to group all Iraqi's together or for that matter all Muslims. Undoubtedly though many people in their society, both men and women alike obviously, are influenced by anti-American, anti-Western thought.

They do not just despise us however. Shiite's hate Sunni's and Sunni's hate Shiites. Within their own society they are at war with eachother.

There are those in the United States that feel to win this war we must stabilize their society. We must make them what we are. We are going to replace hand grenades with Playstations. There will be McDonalds on every street corner. I hate to tell you but their society will never ever resemble ours.

We may think that we do things the right way. We may think that we are the best. But we cannot afford a level of arrogance that suggests that we can change this culture.

We have rid the world of a despot. For that we can be proud. We have forced Al Qaeda into hiding. We have damaged their infrastructure. All good and worthy things. We have shown their people and all the world that you cannot attack us on our home turf and expect to get away with it.

But when we leave they will come out of hiding. They will be more aggressive in recruiting. This will happen whether we leave tomorrow or one hundred years from now.

When we focused on Iraq, Afghanistan started to get out of control. We do not have the people or the money to police the entire Middle East. We are trying and we have left ourselves vulnerable at home.

The Iraqi government has asked us for a timetable on withdrawal. They do not want us there. What should we do?

I do not know about you but I never stay where I am not wanted.
