Leap Day History - Fun Facts & Trivia

It is election year and also leap year. We get one extra day to do with what we want. Why do we have to have an extra day added every four years? The answer is simple, it takes a little over a year for the earth to travel around the sun. The exact amount of time is 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds.

It is interesting to note that not every four years is a leap year. If you can divide the year by 100 it will not be a leap year unless it is divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year but the year 2100 will not be.

Legend has it that in Ireland after St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that it was not fair that women had to wait for men to propose, St. Patrick relented and allowed women to propose only on February 29.

Later in Scotland, Queen Margaret declared that on February 29th a women could ask any man she chose if they could be married. This was the year 1288. Not many remember this but it is rumored that this is how Larry King ended up in his first marriage. Any man who refused this proposal had to pay a fine however. This fine would be in the form of a kiss, a silk dress, or a pair of gloves.
