What Is Up With The Llamas? If you travel around Southeastern Indiana long enough you will find a small but seemingly growing number of farms which feature a number of llama's grazing about. I began to wonder why this is. What exactly are llama's good for?It occurred to me that I really do not know enough about Llamas. Really, can you know too much about llamas? I could be wrong but I don't think so. What follows are some fun facts about llama's which I discovered in my research. 1. Llama's are part of the camel family. 2. They were used as pack animals in South America 5000 years ago. 3. They can live to be 25 years old. 4. They are very intelligent and easy to train. 5. They are a social animal and should be placed with other llama's. 6. Llama's can weigh up to 450 lbs and can be 6 1/2 feet tall to the top of the head. Today llama's are still used as pack animals as well as in farm production in South America. Believe it or not there are some who have discovered that they actually make perfect golf caddy's. They can be used to guard livestock and make great show animals. Primarily they are raised for their fibers. Traditionally their fibers have not been as valuable as that of the alpaca's but through breeding their fibers are starting to approach the quality of the alpaca. Just in case you were in the market for one the cost of a llama can range from 750$ to 6000$. I almost forgot. The one characteristic of the llama that everyone seems to know about is that they spit. This is in fact true but they will typically only spit at other llama's. If they have been abused or raised improperly they may spit at humans. ---------------- ----------------------------------------------- |
