The Miley Cyrus Photo Controversy
Vanity Fair is famous for publishing photo spreads that spark controversy. This week they continued in this tradition.Child icon and pop star Miley Cyrus was featured in a photo which showed her bare back and featuring a sexy pose.
The fifteen year old Miley attended the photo shoot with her parents. The vast majority of the pictures were wholesome and family friendly. One particular photo was all it took to create an uproar.
Sensationalistic journalism featured headlines with the words "topless" in them. Topless to most people implies that her chest was showing. Yes she did not appear to be wearing a top but she was covered in a sheet and part of her back was exposed. The angle is a side view. Quite frankly she would be exposed far more skin in a bikini at the beach.
The photos were taken by world renowned photographer Annie Leibovitz. Miley stated that she thought the pictures were artistic but recently apologized for the photos and stated that she was embarrassed.
The pictures were artistic. Would I let my daughter be photographed like this when she turns fifteen? Not if she was attending high school in Aurora, Indiana but possibly if she was a world renowned super star. Miley leads a different life than any other fifteen year old. She is photographed more than any other fifteen year old.
Will this harm her career? No, absolutely not. She has already endured criticism for other photo scandals. In this one she showed a portion of her back. Let's look at two other child stars and how they presented themselves publicly when they were still children.
First let's take a look at Britney Spears. Growing up as a pre-teen the former Mouseketeer was the definition of virginal. She proclaimed her virtue and stuck by it. After all she was a role model for other young girls. Unfortunately today she is the poster child for self-destruction. She has been plagued by alcohol and drug abuse. She has two small children that she can only visit if supervised. Her career has never been so low nor I suspect her spirits.
Now lets take a look at Brooke Shields. In 1978 at the age of 12 she appeared completely nude in a film featuring Susan Sarandon called Pretty Baby. She later appeared nude in 1980 in the more popular film The Blue Lagoon. At that time this too created a scandal. There was talk of this being child pornography. In the end it was considered art and therefore acceptable. Brooke Shields continued on to have an extremely successful film and television career. She has also become an author publishing a book which has helped many women who are suffering with post-partum depression.
This one photo is not the end of the world. It does not imply that she is a young women of low character and surely destined to go down a long slippery path. Perhaps we should just get over it and move on to something more worthy of our time.
