Take It Easy!  Music Therapy - Stress Relief Tactic #5

The concept of music being able to heal goes way back.  Some of the earliest notable mentions in Western history are found in the writings of ancient Greek philosophers.

Robert Burton wrote in the 16th century in his classic work, The Anatomy of Melancholy, that music and dance were critical in treating mental illness, especially melancholy.

We choose the type of music we listen to based upon what mood we are in.  Sometimes you feel like a little Metallica but then sometimes James Taylor is the perfect choice.  Perhaps we should get used to the concept that we can choose music to change our mood.

Music is in fact helpful in relaxation and stress management.   It can be used in the following ways:

Music can relax tense muscles, enabling you to easily release some of the tension you carry from a stressful day.

Music can be the perfect accessory for practicing yoga, self hypnosis or guided imagery.  It can motivate you to exercise or help melt away stress while taking a hot bath.

Music can help your brain get into a meditative state.  Many find meditation awkward and music can help you get into the swing of things.

Upbeat tunes, can take your mind off the days stress.  The self talk you habitually use can also have a profound effect on your stress level.  Music that has affirming lyrics can further the benefits and complement your positive self talk.

Website of the Week: -- zuzu.net From the website; "At the age of 5, Karolyn played the role of Zuzu Bailey in the holiday film "It's a Wonderful Life." Her childhood film career spanned 16 movies, but she is best remembered for playing the daughter of George and Mary Bailey (James Stewart and Donna Reed). C & P's comment: Karolyn Grimes life has been a series of ups and downs. Yet she embraces the good parts of her past while not focusing on the negative.
