We have just learned that John McCain will be attending the debate.
Apparently the great one is satisfied that enough progress has been made in
the negotiations that he feels comfortable in the belief that the world will
not end if he leaves Washington. It is either that or he believes the
many leading politicians on both sides who are stating that there is no room
for Presidential politics in these negotiations. There is no one stating, except for those associated with his campaign,
that he contributed anything to the progress made at this point. To be
fair Obama's presence can also be considered a non-factor. McCain has been busy throwing spaghetti noodles against the fridge hoping that something will stick. Unfortunately for him nothing has. He made the assertion earlier in the week that he will not be attending the debate if there is no deal. Well, there is no deal and he is attending. Oops! John McCain is using the "maverick" image to its full effect. Everyone admires a maverick or a person who acts on gut instinct and is decisive. What we are finding out is that some of McCain's gut instincts are wrong. He makes mistakes. As a Senator this is covered up by the fact that he does not act alone and he accomplishes nothing without a majority of the Senate. What scares me is that when he is President he will be making decisions for our country in the most powerful political office in the world. He sometimes acts in opposition to his advisors just because he thinks he is right. Acting just to act is rash and in my opinion not the type of behavior that is desirable in a President. While in Washington McCain failed to comment in this grand meeting with the President, Presidential candidates, and Congressional leaders. He admitted that he failed to read the proposal put forth by the President or the House Republicans. What exactly did he think his role was at these negotiations? The negotiations did not need a photo opportunity or "the great one" making a grand show of his statesmanship. They needed discussions and agreement amongst the people whose decisions really matter. I do not want a President who is constantly backtracking on his prior statements and justifying his prior actions when they appear to be made in haste and without much forethought. Concerning tonight's debate, I am reminded of the Clint Eastwood movie Any Which Way You Can. It is fair to say that the quality of the movie is questionable. However, it features an orangutan named Clyde so how bad could it really be. The once retired Philo Beddoe has his hand forced and ultimately fights the East Coast brawler Jack Wilson. The fight was much anticipated and as news circulates among the people who are interested, the information is passed along using the words, "It's on!" Well it is on. It is often said in sports that you play the game to see who wins. Tonight the first quarter of that game will be played. On November 4th we will find out who wins. In the aforementioned movie there was much betting on both of the fighters. If I were a betting man on this Presidential election I am not exactly sure who I would place my bet on but I can darn well guarantee you it will not be on the monkey. ---------------------------------
