Quirky People Finally Getting The Respect They Deserve

In prime time television there has often been very popular neurotic characters. Remember Klinger on MASH, perhaps Murdock from A-Team and do not forget one of my personal favorites, Les Nesman from WKRP. But now in 2007 neuroses is at the forefront. Crazy people have the lead role. The title character even.

I have just one thing to say about this. It's about damn time. Hugh Laurie plays "House" the wonderfully anti-social, pill popping doctor with a case of the "grouchies" for a bedside manner.

Just recently I watched the show "Raines" starring the incomparable Jeff Goldblum. A wonderfully entertaining show in which Goldblum portrays a detective who speaks with the dead people whose murders he is trying to solve.

These types of characters are interesting and real. They are human. These type of people populate our daily lives. Now I would guess that most of us do not know someone who talks to dead people but you get the picture.

It is possible to be a functioning crazy person. Now I do not want you to embrace psychotic behavior that includes violence or other extremely bad decisions. By the same token I do not think that you should be ashamed of quirky, neurotic habits that make you an individual. Who wants to be like everyone else?

If Hugh Laurie played a character that did not have an English accent and liked people then the show would not be doing quite so well in the ratings.

Oh yeah and by the way I did come up with a neurotic lead from the 70's while writing this article. That would be "Mr O.C.D." Felix Unger from the "Odd Couple". I am sure there are others but if I could think of them before I wrote the this it would not have made for a very interesting article now would it?
