Hey Regis Got A Minute? Not For Ringo Starr What a difference a few decades makes. When the Beatles made it to America they proclaimed themselves bigger than Jesus. Although there have been a few more bibles sold than the White Album the Beatles were in fact pretty big. Yes I know "pretty big" is an understatement for you Beatles freaks. I assure you I mean freak in the best possible way.You would think that one of the members of that monstrous mega group from Liverpool would still be able to muster some respect. Not really, not from the folks that matter at the morning talk show Regis & Kelly. Ringo Starr has been promoting his latest album Liverpool 8 on all of the talk shows. I saw him on Letterman and the title song is in fact quite fun. The length of the song is 4 minutes and 15 seconds. Initially Regis' producer Michael Gelman, who rarely gives any indication that he may have a personality, wanted the song to be 2 1/2 minutes or less. After Ringo worked with the song he managed to get the song down to 3 1/2 minutes. This time Gelman demanded that it be less than 3 minutes. At this point Ringo walked off the set. Just from the back and forth that has been described on all the newswires I think Ringo just got fed up with all the shenanigans. There was a definite power struggle between Ringo's people and Regis' people. They did not play well together. Ringo was absolutely right to take a walk. He does not really need Regis. I think he is old enough and wise enough to realize this. Reportedly he also walked off the right way. He was not furious but apparently commented, "God bless and goodbye. We still love Regis." At least Ringo showed some class while Michael Gelman showed him little or no respect. The funny thing is that the other guests on the show were the winners of the Amazing Race and fashion designer Michael Kors. I do not really think that these are the most powerful guests. There has been no indication but I am sure they were allotted more than 2 1/2 minutes otherwise they would not get much past the introductions. It is rather amazing that they could not trim thirty seconds from their other guests time to fit in Ringo and the abridged version of his song. This is Ringo Starr not Boy George. He was a member of the Beatles not Culture Club. Shame on you, Gelman. You could have used a little more creativity in finding a solution to this problem. Perhaps the next time you book an extra young and talented painter ask them to bring only half of each of their paintings. That would be just silly. So was this. ---------------- ----------------------------------------------- |
