Self-Medication – A Big No No If you have ever gone to see a psychiatrist one of the things that they are most adamant about is that you do not self-medicate. They will not medicate you if you are going to medicate yourself.I am not a doctor which sometimes allows me to communicate more effectively why this is. Most people who are dealing with mood disorders are dealing with ups and downs. This is most commonly associated with bipolar disorder or manic depressants however all people suffer from ups and downs. When psychiatrists medicate they are trying to fix what possibly could be a chemical imbalance. They want you as even as possible. This does not just refer to illegal medications obviously. If you are taking your friends valiums or xanax you are seriously affecting your ups and downs. If you are a lifelong pothead and feel the drug is entirely safe then you are wrong. There is strong evidence to relate prolonged usage to among other things severe depression. Cocaine and Oxy’s are potentially much more devastating. Oh yeah, did I mention alcohol. Alcohol is a drug. Alcohol is a drug. Alcohol is a drug. Simply because alcohol is not legal does not mean that it is not a drug. Unfortunately there are many of us who have experience the devastating affects of alcoholism among family and friends. If you drink regularly then you will find that any attempt towards self-improvement will lead to failure. Can’t happen, won’t happen. Many people will fight this until the end but eventually they must come to the conclusion that the alcohol must go. And then there is nicotine. Yes it is a drug as well. It also can affect your ups and downs especially in relation to your blood sugar and your blood pressure. You might think that this is just too much. Then my reply would be that you are just not ready to improve your life. It all goes back to my favorite line, stop doing bad things and start doing good things.
