Speculation and the Death of Heath Ledger

Except for a couple incidents with paparazzi Heath Ledger's life was seemingly devoid of scandal. In death the press if not the country wishes to produce a scandal.

I wonder why there is such a need for speculation. Why is it that we must know all of the minute details concerning his death? If you research the web you can find a timeline of his death featured more prominently than the timeline of his life.

We know he was found naked with sleeping pills in close proximity. There has been some debate over whether he was found on the bed or on the floor. I am sure we will find out more when today's leading example of journalistic integrity tmz.com releases its findings. We have heard reports of suicide and we have heard reports of an accidental death. We have heard that he has been looking sad and we have heard that he was suffering from pneumonia.

Being a male in my late thirties I am not really the demographic that Heath Ledger's earlier movies targeted. Yet I was somewhat familiar with his work and must admit that anytime I flipped through the channels on the television I would always stop to watch A Knights Tale. This is a fact that I have never bragged about to any of my male friends so please do not tell anyone.

Lately he has taken roles that he carefully selected. Roles which required depth and dedication. From all reports he was a young man who was dedicated to his craft. During some interviews that I have seen today he seemed to be of an artistic nature and very thoughtful. One definitely got the impression that there was much more to him than a pretty boy movie star.

Often times you will find that artists with talent and a vision can be tortured by demons and driven to perfection of a craft in which reaching perfection is not quantifiable and a never ending pursuit. He had in fact made statements recently that he could not sleep and had been in the practice of taking Ambien to help him accomplish this. Was he tormented, as was his namesake Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights? Perhaps but we will never know his true thoughts or what went on in his brain no matter how desperately we want to.

We can think instead of his young daughter with the lovely name of Matilda Rose Ledger who he left behind. We can remember his family who suffers more than anyone else. Instead of the unceasing speculation over his death we can remember his life and respect his family that survives.

After all their memories of him matter far more than ours.
