Are Super-Delegates Bad For Democracy? Ultimately the answer is no. We can still vote Republican, we can still vote for a third party candidate, and we can still abstain. The super-delegate system as it is being used by the Democratic party does retard the democratic process for the Democratic party. Parties can set up their system for nominating their candidate any way they choose. I could create my own party and nominate Ralph Nader for President. Oh wait that has been done. A party can draw their candidate out of a hat if they so choose. They could rely on "The Girls Next Door" to nominate their candidate. I am sure there are a few people out there who would vote for Hugh Hefner for President. The super-delegate system could represent a huge problem for the democrats. If they are telling their party members that their vote ultimately does not count they might as well be telling them they have no vote. I believe we fought a war with England over this same issue some time ago. This process can only cost them membership. There will be no one that runs to the Democratic Party because they think the super-delegate system is really cool. I do know that if I was a member of a party and my delegate voted his own conscience and against the majority of the constituency I would no longer be a member of that party. I would not even have to think about it. If I am forced to get out of bed, drive across town, fight traffic and vote then it better well mean something. Just as disturbing is that there is an extremely strong relationship between how much a candidate contributes to a super-delegate and how they vote. Eighty Two percent of the time that person will vote for the candidate who gave them the most money. Now that is scary? I would like to show that if Hillary Clinton manipulates the super-delegate system to become the Democratic Party candidate that this will create horrible results for the United States. But that is tomorrow's article and you are just going to have to wait. ---------------- ----------------------------------------------- |
