Newtonian Laws of Self-Improvement: Third Law

Transferring Newton’s Laws on Motion into Laws for Self-Improvement was fairly easy for his first and second laws.  However, for the third law it posed a dilemma for me and here is why.

Newton’s Third Law states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. I just could not reason that for every positive action that we take in improving our lives there is an equal and opposite negative reaction for us. This was just not going to fly. I gave it much thought.  Eventually a real life example illustrated to me how exactly I could use this idea.

How does a bird fly?  Its wings are thrust in a downward motion pushing against the air.  At the same time the air pushes back and propels the bird upwards.  Ah yes, there is no analogy better suited to self-improvement than a bird taking off into the air.

As I have described on coffeeandprozac.com before, self-improvement can be as simple as not doing bad things and doing good things.

For many of us we need to get rid of the negative thoughts that flood our minds every day.   This requires work and effort.  In other words it requires action.  If we replace a “can’t do” attitude with a “can do” attitude we can not help by being propelled forward or more fittingly for this article, upward.

If negative thinking is your primary problem then it will require a great deal of effort or action on your part.  However, you are more likely to see a greater improvement in your life than someone who has little problem with negative thinking.

Let us try to use this analogy somewhat differently.  If your parents have always told you that you would never succeed then the act of ridding yourself of this ingrained thought should mean phenomenal things for your life.  In other words instead of dwelling on the fact that you have had little support in the past you should try to “push off” of your parents and use them as a springboard to propel you onward and upward.

Stop doing bad things and start doing good things.  That one phrase sounds almost ignorant at first but when you examine it more closely there is so much truth in it.
