Put Yourself in "Time Out"

In lieu of the now politically incorrect spanking many parents place their children in "time out" or enforce quiet time.

It is my belief that many people can take a very important step in obtaining greater sanity if they place themselves in time out. The other night I had to listen to two kids fighting while I was on the computer. The television was on in the background. I could here music playing in the kitchen since my wife was cleaning up after dinner. At this same time the phone was ringing off the hook.

This is the reality of the world we live in. We are bombarded on a daily basis by a never ending supply of noise. The remarkable thing is we are so used to it that we have become desensitized.

Norman Vincent Peale suggested spending fifteen minutes a day in solitude. Personally I think thirty minutes would be much better. We need down time. There are a lot of people who would be surprised how much it helps to destress if you simply turn off the television after the kids go to bed and sit there. Just sit there.

Initially this is all you need to do. Eventually you can tie in other stress relieving activities such as deep breathing or meditation to make this thirty minute period even more productive.

It is difficult to think properly with all the noise that we have to deal with. Consider this thirty minute period every day a gift to yourself. If you think you do not have time then you should make time. You may find that if you start listening to yourself, by yourself, that you may actually learn something that could change your life forever.
