The Only True Motivation to Change

To make deep and permanent changes in your life you have to want to do it for yourself.  You can not undertake this path of personal growth because someone else wants you to do it.  Not your spouse, significant other or family.  It will not work.  Many of us, and by us I mean myself as well, are experts at convincing people that we are going to change.  We do just enough to make that person believe us and then when we feel like we have them back on the line we revert to our old ways.  Time and time again we do this.

We know that people want to believe us.  They want to believe in us.  Let’s just give them enough to make them think it will be alright.

The problem is that eventually they will walk.  If they are smart they will walk anyway.  You really can not blame them.  We’ve lied to them too many times.  We have hurt them too many times.

Once they walk we can do one of two things.  We can move on to the next person, reel them in and then revert to our old behaviors or we can realize that something is fundamentally wrong with how we approach life and make changes because we see it as necessary not that someone else sees it as necessary.

Whether those people that we lost will eventually come back into our lives is INCONSEQUENTIAL.  That should be the last thing on your mind.  It takes time to heal your self.  Much more than a week, a lot longer than a month, and more than likely a year is not going to cut it.  Literally we should be on a life long path towards self-improvement.

So let’s get busy because we have our work cut out for us.
