Am I The Only One Who Does Not Understand Bela Karolyi?

Bela Karolyi is a gymastics legend. As a coach his most famous pupils are Nadia Comaneci and Mary Lou Retton. There are few if any people out there who know more about the sport of gymnastics.

In 1981 Bela defected from Romania which accounts for his funny accent. In 2008 he is covering gymnastics for NBC alongside Bob Costas.

Bela Karolyi would seem to be the ideal choice to provide commentary on Olympic gymnastics. Except for one thing. He is very difficult to understand.

The ability to understand Mr. Karolyi is further complicated by the fact that when he gets excited he talks faster. By the time I have figured out what he said in the beginning there is a complete volume that I have missed.

I was wore out by the time he was done giving his commentary. It was literally work trying to decipher his golden nuggets of input.

You may perceive from the tone of this article from the beginning that I am going to suggest that NBC could have picked a better analyst for women's gymnastics.  That is certainly not the case.

I must conclude that in the end it was worth the effort. He certainly is a wealth of knowledge and his predictions were accurate.

Bela Karolyi's enthusiasm about the sport is catching. I may not have known what he was saying but my excitement was growing just watching him. I could have hit the mute button and I would have known that something very interesting and exciting was going on.

Watching him speak about the women's all-around competition and then the results was one of the highlights of the Olympic coverage to this point.  The fact that the US finished with the gold and silver was a bit of a rush as well.

It is fun and sometimes inspiring to watch someone doing for a living what they truly enjoy.  Not many of us have that opportunity.

Despite the language barrier I for one hope that NBC decides to use Bela Karolyi again and again.
